Q. What goes into your beta reading service?
This service is often done for completed manuscripts. But I do also offer it if you need insight and feedback on a partially completed work before you're ready to continue with it. Here's the general process:
First, I'll talk with you to get an idea of what your goals are as an author, for your work, what your expectations are for a beta read, and what's important to you about your story. I'll also explain my process and what I can offer as a beta reader to help you reach your goals. This conversation could either be a scheduled video call or email conversation, whichever you are more comfortable with.
Note: I prefer to go into a beta read without spoilers so I can give authentic reader reactions to plot turns, reveals, the climax, and resolution. If we agree to work together, we'll sign a contract agreement that protects your work and specifies the services, payment terms, and the timetable for completion of services.
I encourage you to send a list of questions about my reader reactions to the plot, characterization, worldbuilding, pacing, etc., and anything you may have concerns about with your story.
I will read your manuscript, leaving reader reaction comments as I go and making notes of reactions that can't be contained in the comments.
I will take some time to ponder what I've read and what elicited my reactions.
I will go over the manuscript and comments again to make sure I've covered important points and that my comments are clear and useful as reactions.
I will write a report of important points of feedback including answers to your list of questions.
I will send you a copy of your manuscript with comments alongside the report.
